Sulfasalazine Delayed Release Tablets USP

Sulfasalazine Delayed Release Tablets USP are anti-inflammatory tablets used to treat inflammatory bowel diseases (like ulcerative colitis) and rheumatoid arthritis. The delayed-release coating ensures the medicine works in the intestines where it is needed most.

Sulfasalazine Delayed Release Tablets USP belong to the aminosalicylate class of anti-inflammatory medicines. They are designed with a special coating that allows the drug to release slowly in the intestines, reducing stomach irritation and improving effectiveness.

Mechanism of Action:

Sulfasalazine is broken down in the colon into 5-aminosalicylic acid (5-ASA) and sulfapyridine.

  • 5-ASA reduces inflammation in the bowel.

  • Sulfapyridine contributes to the therapeutic effect in rheumatoid arthritis.

Indications:

  • Treatment of ulcerative colitis (reduces inflammation, prevents relapse)

  • Management of Crohn’s disease (in selected cases)

  • Treatment of rheumatoid arthritis in patients not responding well to other medicines

  • Sometimes used in juvenile idiopathic arthritis

Dosage & Administration:

  • Taken orally, after meals to reduce stomach upset.

  • Dose depends on age, weight, and medical condition.

  • Delayed-release tablets must be swallowed whole—not crushed or chewed.

Precautions:

  • Not recommended in patients allergic to sulfa drugs or salicylates.

  • Use with caution in liver/kidney disease.

  • Regular monitoring of blood counts and liver function may be required.

  • Should be used with medical supervision during pregnancy and breastfeeding.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Loss of appetite, nausea, vomiting

  • Headache, dizziness

  • Rash, fever (allergic reaction in some patients)

  • Rare: low blood counts, liver problems
