Primaquine Phosphate Tablets IP belong to the class of antimalarial medicines. They are widely used for the treatment and prevention of malaria, especially for the radical cure of Plasmodium vivax and Plasmodium ovale infections, which can remain dormant in the liver and cause relapses.

Mechanism of Action:

Primaquine acts against the hypnozoite (dormant liver stage) of malaria parasites, thereby preventing recurrence. It also shows activity against gametocytes, reducing malaria transmission.

Indications:

• Radical cure of P. vivax and P. ovale malaria

• Prevention of malaria relapses

• As a part of combination therapy in malaria eradication programs

Dosage & Administration:

• Administered orally, with dosage depending on patient’s weight, age, and medical condition.

• Should be taken only under a doctor’s prescription and supervision.

Precautions:

• Not effective against acute attack of malaria (used with other antimalarials).

• Contraindicated in patients with G6PD deficiency, as it may cause hemolytic anemia.

• Use with caution in pregnant women and infants.

Possible Side Effects:

• Headache, dizziness

• Rare but serious: hemolysis in G6PD-deficient patients
