Quinine Sulphate Tablets are antimalarial medicines used in the treatment of uncomplicated and severe malaria caused by Plasmodium falciparum. They work by interfering with the growth and reproduction of malaria parasites inside red blood cells.

Quinine Sulphate Tablets are an established antimalarial drug belonging to the quinoline group. They are primarily used in the treatment of malaria, particularly cases caused by Plasmodium falciparum when other modern antimalarials are not available or effective.

Mechanism of Action:

Quinine acts by interfering with the parasite’s ability to digest hemoglobin inside red blood cells, leading to toxic accumulation and death of the parasite.

Indications:

  • Treatment of uncomplicated and severe malaria (Plasmodium falciparum)

  • Sometimes used for nocturnal leg cramps (though not common now)

Dosage & Administration:

  • Administered orally under medical supervision.

  • Dose depends on the patient’s age, weight, and severity of infection.

  • Often used in combination with other antimalarials to prevent resistance.

Precautions:

  • Should be taken only on prescription.

  • Use with caution in patients with heart disease, tinnitus, or kidney problems.

  • Avoid alcohol and grapefruit juice while on therapy.

  • Not recommended during pregnancy unless prescribed by a doctor.

Possible Side Effects:

  • Nausea, vomiting, stomach upset

  • Headache, dizziness, blurred vision

  • Tinnitus (ringing in ears), hearing loss in rare cases

  • Low blood sugar (hypoglycemia)

  • Allergic reactions in sensitive patients
